DESCRIPTION:PLENĀRSĒDE / PLENARY SESSIONThe plenary session “Environme
ntal Resource Sustainability and Climate Change Mitigation” highlights t
he growing importance of sustainability in addressing global environmental
challenges and ensuring the responsible use of natural resources. Univers
ities play an essential role in this process by generating knowledge\, edu
cating future professionals\, and developing innovative solutions for a mo
re sustainable society.Dr.Biol. Olga Mutere\, Leading Researcher at the Fa
culty of Medicine and Life Sciences\, Department of Molecular Life Science
s\, Microbiology and Biotechnology\,Latvian Biomedical Research and Study
Centre\, Getliņi EKO"Evaluation of functional capacity and plastic-degrad
ing potential of Bacillus spp. and other bacteria derived from the Getliņ
i landfill"The presentation will focus on the exploration of microbial com
munities inhabiting a municipal solid waste landfill and their potential r
ole in plastic degradation within the landfill ecosystem. The goal of the
study was to explore microbial communities residing in municipal solid wa
ste landfill to assess their potential to degrade plastic within the landf
ill ecosystem. The project implementation was divided into two major resea
rch directions: (1) comprehensive characterization of the landfill microbi
ome\, and (2) investigation of the functional potential of microbial commu
nity members through a series of in vitro experiments. Renārs Kairis\, S
ustainability Manager at the University of Latvia and Head of the Eco-Coun
cil"Sustainability roadmap at the University of Latvia"The presentation wi
ll focus on how the university integrates sustainability principles into i
ts strategic development and day-to-day operations\, highlighting the impo
rtant role that higher education institutions play in climate change mitig
ation and the promotion of long-term sustainable development.Format: in pe
