PLENĀRSĒDE / PLENARY SESSION

The plenary session “Environmental Resource Sustainability and Climate Change Mitigation” highlights the growing importance of sustainability in addressing global environmental challenges and ensuring the responsible use of natural resources. Universities play an essential role in this process by generating knowledge, educating future professionals, and developing innovative solutions for a more sustainable society.

  1. Dr.Biol. Olga Mutere, Leading Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, Department of Molecular Life Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology,
Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, Getliņi EKO
"Evaluation of functional capacity and plastic-degrading potential of Bacillus spp. and other bacteria derived from the Getliņi landfill"
The presentation will focus on the exploration of microbial communities inhabiting a municipal solid waste landfill and their potential role in plastic degradation within the landfill ecosystem.
The goal of the study was to explore microbial communities residing in municipal solid waste landfill to assess their potential to degrade plastic within the landfill ecosystem. The project implementation was divided into two major research directions: (1) comprehensive characterization of the landfill microbiome, and (2) investigation of the functional potential of microbial community members through a series of in vitro experiments.

  2. Renārs Kairis, Sustainability Manager at the University of Latvia and Head of the Eco-Council
"Sustainability roadmap at the University of Latvia"
The presentation will focus on how the university integrates sustainability principles into its strategic development and day-to-day operations, highlighting the important role that higher education institutions play in climate change mitigation and the promotion of long-term sustainable development.
